Majed Shabbir - Andrologist

Majed is a highly esteemed and internationally renowned Consultant Urological Surgeon at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital, London, where he has been the Lead Clinician for Andrology, Male Infertility and Genito-Urethral Reconstruction since 2013. He is also the Immediate Past Chair of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Section of Andrology & Genito-urethral Reconstruction.

Since his appointment in 2012, Majed set up the microTESE (microsurgical sperm retrieval) program at Guy’s Hospital, which has become the largest microTESE service South of the Thames, covering Kent, Surrey, Sussex and beyond. His audited outcomes exceed international benchmarks. He has also developed a rapid access, tertiary referral onco-microTESE service for fertility preservation in testis cancer patients.

In addition, he has set up services for sickle cell priapism, urethral reconstruction, and penile prosthetic surgery at Guy’s, and has developed one of the largest tertiary referral practices for Andrology in the UK.

Educational Roles

Majed has taught and trained a generation of surgeons and has been a long-standing Tutor for Male Factor Infertility for the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), the British Fertility Society (BFS), the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RCOG) and has also been invited to teach at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE).

He has served as Andrology Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RSC Ed), and an invited speaker at several Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) events. He has been a faculty member for the European Association of Urology (EAU) and the Evelina Paediatirc Urology Viva course.

He is the co-founder and joint lead of the international AGOUR course for the FRCS(Urol) covering all aspects of andrology, genital oncology and urethral reconstruction, and has been invited as an international surgical mentor and lecturer on several live surgery and micro surgical courses worldwide.

Research Interests

Majed is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College, London, and has supervised both undergraduate and postgraduate research in his area of interest.  He has published >50 articles in peer review journals, as well as >20 book chapters in his field. He also serves on the editorial board of 2 international journals.

National Roles and Committees

Majed has been an elected member of the BAUS National Executive Committee since 20 and served as the National Chair for Andrology and Genito urethral Surgery in the UK from 2020-2022. He has served on the BAUS Education Committee and been an Expert Advisor to the UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). He has been a member of guidelines panels for BAUS (genital emergencies), The British Association for Sexual Health & HIV (BASHH – epididymo-orchitis), and the UK Standards for the Clinical Care of Adults with Sickle Cell Disease.  He is currently a member of the National Haemoglobinopathy panel of experts (sickle cell priapism) and the UK NICE guidelines committee.
